Many insurance providers require that patients obtain a referral prior to scheduling an appointment with a particular physician or for a particular test or procedure. It is the responsibility of the patient to speak with her insurance carrier to determine if a referral is required, and to obtain the referral prior to the visit or procedure. Sometimes the insurance provider will provide more than one referral at a time (either for a certain number of visits or for a given time period). Please keep track of your referrals.
