Ovulation describes the physical events during which an oocyte (egg) is released from the ovary and becomes available to enter the fallopian tubes (where fertilization by sperm can take place). Ovulation generally occurs about two weeks before the next period begins. Some women frequently fail to ovulate and may go several weeks or months between periods. Ovulation is required for pregnancy to occur naturally. There are several disorders associated with ovulation dysfunction; polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common.
