For comprehensive diagnosis of infertility, your physician will begin by taking a detailed health history of both partners. Information gathered will include childhood illnesses, medications used, past hospitalizations or operations, prior tests, procedures and treatments, exposure to environmental toxins, and a family history.
Next, your physician will perform a gynecological examination. A transvaginal sonogram will be included; this painless-but-informative test evaluates the pelvic organs. This examination can be performed during your period; at times, it may even be preferable to examine you during this time. Finally, a personalized plan for completely evaluating the fertility of both partners will be explained. The diagnostic plan of care will include certain of the tests described in the rest of this section.
