Initial Office Visit
At the initial office visit for comprehensive diagnosis of infertility, your physician will begin by taking a detailed history of both partners’ past health, if relevant. Information gathered will include childhood illnesses, medications used, past hospitalizations or operations, prior tests, procedures and treatments, exposure to environmental toxins, and a family history. Next, your physician will perform a physical examination on the woman who plans to become pregnant. A transvaginal sonogram will be included; this painless-but-informative test evaluates the pelvic organs. This examination can be performed during your period; at times, it may even be preferable to examine you during this time. Finally, a nurse will offer and explain a personalized plan for completely evaluating the fertility of both partners, as appropriate to your particular situation. The diagnostic plan of care will include certain of the tests described in the rest of this section.
