Embryo transfer involves replacing the embryos into the uterus, through the vagina and cervix. The transfer is performed 3-5 days after the egg retrieval. The number of embryos to transfer depends on the age of the woman, the quality of the embryos, and the attitudes of the patient and partner regarding multiple pregnancy and multifetal reduction.
Embryo transfers are painless and are performed under ultrasound guidance without anesthesia. The ultrasound is performed using an abdominal probe and a full bladder is required at the time of transfer. Embryos that appear to be normally developed can undergo embryo cryopreservation for later use.
