The IVF Process
Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Egg retrieval is the removal of the mature eggs from the ovaries. An HCG injection is administered 34-36 hours before the retrieval takes place. The procedure is performed under intravenous sedation by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

No incisions are required. Patients are monitored by a registered nurse for approximately one hour after the retrieval, prior to being discharged from our center. At the time of egg retrieval, semen is also collected from a partner or donor for the next step in the IVF process, egg insemination. For more, see Semen Collection Patient Prep.
