Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

The HSG is an X-ray test performed primarily to evaluate the fallopian tubes as well as the uterine cavity.  Like the saline sonohysterogram, the HSG is performed after the menstrual period ends and before ovulation occurs. An iodine-based dye is introduced through the cervix into the uterus and fallopian tubes. This test is used to examine a woman's uterus and fallopian tubes. Blockages (occlusions) of one or both of the fallopian tubes, uterine abnormalities or masses, and scar tissue can often be detected by the HSG test.

It is common for some women to experience cramping and discomfort during the HSG; however, most women tolerate the procedure well. The HSG is generally performed at the Vascular Suite at Columbus Circle Imaging (1790 Broadway at West 58 Street, 9th floor 212-590-5527).

One of the CRC's nurses will advise you of an appropriate date for your hysterosalpingogram, so that you may call the Vascular Suite and schedule the appointment. Although most women report only minor cramping and short-term discomfort during this procedure, some women, especially those who have blocked tubes, report significant pain during the procedure. We recommend that you take 600 mg of ibuprofen 30 minutes before the procedure (unless you have a history of an allergic reaction to ibuprofen or a history of gastritis, a gastric ulcer or bleeding disorder).
