Laparotomy is a procedure in which a vertical or horizontal skin incision is made in order to gain access to the abdominal and pelvic organs. Laparotomies are performed in order to remove fibroid tumors from the muscle of the uterus (myomectomy) or to remove pelvic masses or cysts. This surgery requires an inpatient hospital admission and is performed under general anesthesia.
