As previously described, hysteroscopy can be performed to evaluate the uterine cavity. Importantly, it can also be used for therapeutic procedures. These include the reopening of uterine scarring; removal of abnormal lesions, such as polyps and fibroids; repair of congenital defects of the uterus; and the opening of intrauterine blockages of the fallopian tubes.
Hysteroscopy involves dilation of the cervix and introduction of a telescope through the cervix into the uterine cavity. An attached light source and video camera enhance visualization of the uterine cavity. Hysteroscopy is performed under general anesthesia.
Hysteroscopic removal of fibroid. Part of the fibroid has been removed with a loop called a resectoscope
